TRICHY: Tamil Nadu state highway department on Sunday started its work to resize Anna statue roundabout in Melachinthamani on Karur-Trichy-Chennai National Highway in Trichy district.
The roundabout caused frequent bottlenecks in vehicle movement on the highway between Srirangam, Chathiram bus stand and Melachinathamani.
Heavy machinery was brought on Sunday to demolish a portion of the roundabout and remove a few plants.
The department plans to demolish the outer ring of the roundabout.
Radius of the roundabout will be reduced from 10 metres to six metres after the resizing work is complete. Officials in the department confirmed that Anna’s statue will not be changed. By resizing the roundabout, the road will get wider for better vehicular movement. “We will complete the work within a week,” said an official from the state highway department.
