VADODARA: In a major drive against the thriving drug trade in the city, the detection of crime branch (DCB) raided 10 different spots and detained dozens of youngsters, some of whom were found with small quantity of marijuana on them.
DCB officials said that they had received a tip-off about the places were drugs were being sold and consumed following which it conducted raids.
However, no complaint was filed against anyone.
“We had information that some drug peddlers are selling marijuana in different areas of the city, particularly targeting youngsters, especially school and college students. We formed 10 separate teams to trace this network,” said Jaydeepsinh Jadeja, DCP (crime).
The cops raided Subhashnagar slums under Vishwamitri bridge, Hanuman Tekri at Soma Talav, Manisha Crossroads, Santoshinagar in Subhanpura, Vasna Road, Ellora Park, Panigate, Fatehgunj, Akota and Sun Pharma Road where the peddlers used to sell contraband throughout the day.
“We detained 56 youngsters, including students. Seven of them were minor, while seven were girls. They were let off after some tests,” Jadeja said.
The police conducted spot tests of these youngsters and found traces of marijuana in most. “We didn’t file any complaint as youngsters’ career would get spoiled. The idea is to de-addict these youngsters through proper counselling,” a police official said.
The cops have also picked up three peddlers but they couldn’t be booked under the NDPS Act as they had very little quantity of marijuana in their possession.

“These drug peddlers know how to escape law by not carrying big quantity of drugs with them. The marijuana is packed in small amounts and sold to the buyers,” cops said.
Investigations revealed that most of the drugs arrive in the city either by railway or by road from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Mumbai.
“The drive against drug abuse and trade will continue in the coming days. Those selling drugs at medical store or paan kiosks won’t be spared. We will get rid of drug nuisance from the city,” Jadeja told TOI.
