VADODARA: A jail sepoy at Vadodara Central Jail was arrested on Monday for smuggling a SIM card inside the jail premises for Rs 500.
The accused Hardik Kher had taken the money from wife of an undertrial prisoner to pass on the SIM card to him. Police said that Kher’s name was revealed during interrogation of the undertrial Yogendra Mahida’s wife Priyanka Mahida.
According to police, Kher had approached Priyanka when she had come to jail to meet her husband.
He had told her that he can smuggle a SIM card inside the jail for her husband and will charge a nominal amount of Rs 500. Cops could reach till Priyanka while they were going through call detail records of the SIM card which was found with a mobile phone in November last year.
“The undertrial had borrowed phone from another accused inside the jail and he only needed a SIM card to talk to his wife and other family members from the jail so an understanding was reached with the jail sepoy to bring in the SIM card,” said a police official. He added that Kher is being interrogated if he had smuggled any more sim cards or any other prohibited items inside the jail in the past.
Kher worked in the Group IX of state reserve police force at Lalbaug for 18 months before being selected for jail sepoy’s post a year ago.
