Joaquin Phoenix won his first Oscar on Sunday for his terrifying performance as an isolated loner who becomes one of the world's best known comic book villains in 'Joker'. Phoenix, 45, won the best actor Oscar after three previous nominations, crowning an awards season that has seen him sweep every major prize for his role in the standalone origin story of Batman's arch enemy.

South Korea's 'Parasite', a pitch-black comedy about haves and have-nots in modern Seoul, won the Oscar for best international film on Sunday. The thriller, showing how struggling scammers insinuate their way into the life of a rich family, with dire consequences, was considered the front runner going into Sunday's ceremony after winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival last year, as well as Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards last month.

Billie Eilish just became the meme of the Oscar 2020, all thanks to her priceless expressions during the musical performances. The Grammy winner, who was seated in the audience, seemed a bit confused during the musical medley put up by Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig. The cameras panned at the 18-year-old who gave a hilarious look as she looked at the big screen.

Rami Malek bagged the Best Actor Oscar Award last year for his performance in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. This year the actor has turned presenter for the ceremony and made a dapper, all-black appearance on the red carpet. As a winner of Oscar Award 2019, Rami shared some words of wisdom for the 2020 nominees. He said, “It is all about patience, tenacity. Believe in yourself, be kind and your authentic self. Be yourself, don’t change.”

Actors Chris Rock and Steve Martin used their comic skills to point out the lack of female nominees in the directing category at this year's Oscars. Rock said: "There's something missing this year." And they both filled in the blank with: 'Vaginas', according to reports. While Greta Gerwig's 'Little Women' was up for best picture, no women were included this year in the category of best director. During Janelle Monae's musical introduction to the show at the Theatre in Hollywood, she also commented on the topic. "We celebrate all the women who directed phenomenal films," she said. She also added, "Happy Black History Month!" On the red carpet, Natalie Portman wore a Dior Haute Couture dress that paid tribute to the snubbed female directors by listing their surnames in gold embroidery down the lapel. In the Academy's 92-year history, only five women have been nominated for best director. Meanwhile, Martin and Rock also joked about Oscars not having a host anymore. During the introduction, Martin asked why the Oscars don't have a host anymore and Rock quipped: "Twitter".

Renee Zellweger's poignant portrayal of yesteryear actor-singer Judy Garland in her twilight years helped the actor win the best actress at the 92 Academy Awards here. It was a second Academy Award for Zellweger who previously won a best supporting actress Oscar 15 years ago from her role in 'Cold Mountain'.

The show, that also had rousing performances from Elton John, Eminem, Billie Eilish, Idina Menzel and others, included a special rap re-cap performance by Indian-American actor Utkarsh Ambudkar. A clear standout performance, he won a lot of praise for bringing something new to the show and interestingly perfectly guessing the winners’ who were included in his segment.

I’m full of so much gratitude now. I do not feel elevated above any of my fellow nominees or anyone in this room, because we share the same love – that’s the love of film. And this form of expression has given me the most extraordinary life. I don’t know where I’d be without it. But I think the greatest gift that it’s given me, and many people in [this industry] is the opportunity to use our voice for the voiceless. I’ve been thinking about some of the distressing issues that we’ve been facing collectively. I think at times we feel or are made to feel that we champion different causes. But for me, I see commonality. I think, whether we’re talking about gender inequality or racism or queer rights or indigenous rights or animal rights, we’re talking about the fight against injustice. We’re talking about the fight against the belief that one nation, one people, one race, one gender, one species, has the right to dominate, use and control another with impunity.
