Deepika Padukone visits Jawaharlal Nehru University to support students protesting against JNU violence

Deepika Padukone, who is currently in Delhi for her film promotion, visited Jawaharlal Nehru University to extend her support to the students protesting against the violence. The Bollywood actor was seen standing with students as the demonstrators raised the slogan of "Jai Bhim-Jai Bhim". However, she did not issue any statement.

Deepika Padukone on Tuesday visited Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to extend her support to the students protesting against the violence at the campus.
The Bollywood actress was seen standing with students, including Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh, who were attacked on Sunday evening. However, she did not issue any statement.

Deepika's visit to JNU, however, triggered calls by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to boycott her films.

Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga, spokesperson of Delhi unit of BJP, posted a photo of the Bollywood actor at JNU and tweeted, "RT if you will Boycott Movies of @deepikapadukone for her Support to #TukdeTukdeGang and Afzal Gang".

Actress Swara Bhasker, who condemned the violence at JNU, supported Deepika.

Other celebrities including
Anurag Kashyap, Pooja Bhatt, Anubhav Sinha, Richa Chadha, Lisa Ray, Vishal Dadlani and Sudhir Mishra also lauded Deepika for move.
Violence broke out at JNU on Sunday evening as masked men armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, prompting the administration to call in police which conducted a flag march.
Celebrities including Anurag Kashyap, Anurag Basu, Taapsee Pannu, Gauahar Khan, Vishal Bhardwaj with wife Rekha Bhardwaj, Richa Chadha, Ali Fazal, Reema Kagti and Dia Mirza protested against the attack in Mumbai.
Earlier, during a media interaction, on being asked about the protest across the nation against JNU violence, Deepika had said she is proud that we are not scared to express ourselves, and the fact that we are considering this, and thinking about the future, and irrespective of the point of view we have, the fact remains that it is good to see.
The actress added that she is proud that people are voicing their opinion, out on the streets, or otherwise and that this has to happen if we want to see any kind of change in the society as bringing upon the point of view is necessary.
On the work front, Deepika is currently promoting her upcoming film 'Chhapaak'. The actress will be seen playing the role of the acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal in the movie. Helmed by Meghna Gulzar, the film also stars Vikrant Massey in a pivotal role. The film will hit the screens on January 10, 2020.
'Chhapaak' will be locking horns at the box-office with Om Raut’s ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’. The historical drama stars Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan and Kajol in the lead roles.
