Raipur: Four Maoists were shot dead in an encounter with security forces in a forest in Sukma on Wednesday, the police said. Explosives, firearms and raw material for IEDs were found at the scene of the gun battle. The dead Maoists will be identified when the troops return to base, said officers.
Security forces had received intelligence that a squad from the Maoist Jagargunda area committee was on the move in the forests of Nilagod, Pulamphar and Surpanguda areas, Bastar range IG P Sundarraj said.
A joint force of the District Reserve Guards' Battalion 223, CRPF and CoBRA commandos of 201 Battalion headed to cut them off. Around 9.30 am, a gunfight broke out in Pulamphar when the Maoists fired on the security personnel, said police.
"The exchange of fire went on for half an hour after which the Maoists retreated. When the guns fell silent, troops found four bodies," the IG said.
