The
Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) took over the security of Srinagar International Airport (SIA) on Wednesday. It will take charge of
Jammu airport in the first week of March and then Leh airport. So far, these three airports have been jointly under J&K Police and CRPF. The move comes barely a month and half after J&K Police DSP Davinder Singh, who was posted at SIA as number two of the anti-hijacking squad, was arrested along with three
Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists on January 11.
On January 13, the MHA had sanctioned about 800 personnel from CISF to take over security duties at the three airports of the newly created UTs of J&K and
Ladakh. The change took place under CISF airport sector special DG M A Ganapathy. SIA unit will be headed by a senior commandant rank officer. With induction at Srinagar, total number of airports under CISF security cover has risen to 62.
