Khap slaps Rs 5 lakh fine on inter-faith couple in Jhansi, asks woman to undergo 'purification'

A khap panchayat has issued a diktat against an inter-faith couple, allegedly ostracized by the community since 2015, asking the woman to undergo 'purification' by consuming 'gobar' (cow dung) and 'gaumutra' (cow urine).

JHANSI: A khap panchayat has issued a diktat against an inter-faith couple, allegedly ostracized by the community since 2015, asking the woman to undergo 'purification' by consuming 'gobar' (cow dung) and 'gaumutra' (cow urine). The couple were also asked to pay Rs 5 lakh as fine if they wanted the community to accept them. One person has been arrested.
According to police, property dealer Bhupesh Yadav had married Aastha,from the Jain community, in 2015.
Though Bhupesh's family had no objection to the marriage, community members snapped all ties with them . On Friday, the couple lodged a complaint with the district magistrate.
A case was also lodged against a community member, Jhallu Mate, and his associates on Saturday under sections of the IPC. Mate was later arrested. Arindam Ghosh
