Warming may cut GDP by 90% by 2100: Study
NEW DELHI: Global warming is expected to have a devastating impact on India’s economic growth and GDP may be more than 90% lower by 2100, a recent study has shown. It also forecast that a 3°C of warming by 2100 has the potential to reduce the level of global GDP by 21%.
In India, where population weighted annual temperatures have risen by about 0.5°C to around 26°C today, the GDP level would have been 20% higher and growth as much as 0.75 percentage points higher in 2019 in the absence of any warming to date.
According to the two scenarios explored by the study, unmitigated climate change will make 75% of countries poorer in per capita terms than they would be without climate change.
“According to our analysis, the impact of future climate change will severely impact the livelihood of populations in a large number of countries — some catastrophically so,” global forecasting firm Oxford Economics said.
