CHENNAI: Former Indian captain and current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has helped the team scale many highs during his tenure at the helm of affairs. Ganguly was instrumental in putting forth a side that was able to win in all conditions. He helped India draw the Test series against England, Australia and even win on Pakistan soil in the historic series in 2004.
More importantly, under his tenure --- the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Kaif, Harbhajan Singh and --- many youngsters made their presence felt on the international stage and went on to have fruitful careers.
June 20 marks the Test debut of Ganguly who started off with a bang --- scoring a century at Lord’s against England --- back in 1996.
Former Indian skipper Kris Srikkanth believes Ganguly’s proactive approach helped the team immensely.
“Ganguly was proactive. He was the guy who was able to form the team combination. Like how in 1976 Clive Lloyd formed the winning combination (for the West Indies team), Sourav put the correct team together and then inspired them. That’s why Ganguly was a successful captain, even in abroad conditions. They started winning abroad. Ganguly is a born leader,” Srikkanth said in Star Sports 1 Tamil’s “Cricket Connected – Aattam Thodarum”.
