Five held as J&K police bust Jaish module in Srinagar; foil terror bid planned for R-Day

A large cache of explosive material has been recovered from the five terror operatives, according to the police.

The Srinagar Police on Thursday broke up a Jaish-e-Mohammad terror module in the city and averted a major terror attack that the outfit had planned ahead of Republic Day in the valley. Five operatives have been arrested, police said.

“The police zeroed in on a Jaish-e-Mohammad terror module and five people have been arrested,” Deputy Inspector General of Police, Central Kashmir, V K Birdi said. “They were arrested during investigations into FIR No. 02/2020 of Police Station Nigeen pertaining to a terror attack on January 8, near the Habak crossing,” he said.

Birdi said that during the course of investigation it was revealed that these five men were involved in the recent terror attack at Habak.

A large cache of explosive material has been recovered from the five terror operatives, according to the police.

“In a major success, the Srinagar Police busts Jaish module. Two grenade blasts in the Hazratbal area worked out. Major attack averted ahead of Republic Day,” the Jammu and Kashmir Police said in a tweet.

Two earlier grenade attacks around Srinagar were also carried out by the same terror module, the police added.

“Those arrested are Aijaz Ahmed Sheikh of Sadarbal Hazratbal, Umar Hameed Sheikh of Asaar Colony Hazratbal, Imtiyaz Ahmed Chikla of Asaar Colony Hazratbal, Sahil Farooq Gojri of Ellahibagh Soura and Naseer Ahmed Mir of Sadarbal Hazratbal,” the Srinagar Police said.

The five JeM operatives were allegedly planning a major terror attack in the run-up to Republic Day celebrations in Kashmir. According to the police:

Imtiyaz Ahmed Chikla, alias Imran, is the son of Mohammad Sidiq Chikla, a resident of Asaar Colony, Hazratbal. He is approximately 31 years old and is a shop keeper.

Sahil Farooq Gojri is the son of Farooq Ahmed Gojri, a resident of Ellahibagh, Soura. He is approximately 26 years old and worked in a private firm.

Naseer Ahmad Mir is the son of Mohammad Ashraf Mir, a resident of Sadarbal Hazratbal. He is 25 years old and ran a business of his own.

Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh is the son of Late Ghulam Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Sadarbal Hazratbal. He is approximately 38 years old and a driver by profession.

Umar Hameed Sheikh is the son of Abdul Hameed Sheikh, a resident of Asaar Colony, Hazratbal. A street vendor by profession, he is roughly 28 years old.
