Telecom major Bharti Airtel and Amazon Web Services (AWS), a cloud service provider, announced a multi-year, strategic collaboration agreement (SCA) to offer cloud solutions to large and small enterprises in India.

Under this partnership, the two companies will offer industry-specific solutions to customers across different sectors including banking and financial services, manufacturing, IT/ITeS, and media and entertainment.

Puneet Chandok, President, India and South Asia, AWS, said in a virtual conference that they are seeing increasing adoption of its over 175 cloud offering among its customers for various reasons. This ranges from reducing the cost structure and risk to enabling connected car platforms for auto manufacturers.

Harmeen Mehta, CIO & Head – Cloud and Security Business, Bharti Airtel, said since the pandemic, digital adoption grew at the scale that has it has never seen before.

Digital transformation that used to happen over the period of 18 months is now happening every quarter, she said. “There have never been a better time than now to rethink policy.”

COVID-19 Vaccine

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a vaccine work?

A vaccine works by mimicking a natural infection. A vaccine not only induces immune response to protect people from any future COVID-19 infection, but also helps quickly build herd immunity to put an end to the pandemic. Herd immunity occurs when a sufficient percentage of a population becomes immune to a disease, making the spread of disease from person to person unlikely. The good news is that SARS-CoV-2 virus has been fairly stable, which increases the viability of a vaccine.

How many types of vaccines are there?

There are broadly four types of vaccine — one, a vaccine based on the whole virus (this could be either inactivated, or an attenuated [weakened] virus vaccine); two, a non-replicating viral vector vaccine that uses a benign virus as vector that carries the antigen of SARS-CoV; three, nucleic-acid vaccines that have genetic material like DNA and RNA of antigens like spike protein given to a person, helping human cells decode genetic material and produce the vaccine; and four, protein subunit vaccine wherein the recombinant proteins of SARS-COV-2 along with an adjuvant (booster) is given as a vaccine.

What does it take to develop a vaccine of this kind?

Vaccine development is a long, complex process. Unlike drugs that are given to people with a diseased, vaccines are given to healthy people and also vulnerable sections such as children, pregnant women and the elderly. So rigorous tests are compulsory. History says that the fastest time it took to develop a vaccine is five years, but it usually takes double or sometimes triple that time.

This comes at the back of accelerated adoption of digital at the back of COVID-19 by firms across sectors. Cloud, Mehta said, is even more critical and important. For the company, close 60 percent of revenue accrues from digital properties, she said.

Apart from AWS, Airtel has partnership with Google Cloud, which it announced in January. The deal enables Airtel to offer G-Suite services to small and medium businesses through Airtel integrated ICT portfolio. The services include Google’s intelligent apps such as Gmail, Google Docs and Google Drive on the cloud.

Mehta pointed out that the G-Suite offering will not overlap with AWS partnership. In addition just like how AWS work with multiple partners, Airtel will work with different partners as well, she added. But Mehta was quick to add that this partnership with AWS is strategic and deep.

Airtel serves over 2,500 large enterprises and more than a million emerging businesses and companies with an integrated product portfolio, including Airtel Cloud, a multi-cloud product and solutions business, the company said in a statement.

Indian public cloud services market is likely to touch $7.1 billion by 2024, growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.3 percent, according to an IDC report.
