Filmmaker Hansal Mehta, known for films like Shahid, Aligarh, and Omerta, will direct a web series based on gangster Vikas Dubey, who was killed in an encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Police last month.

The National Award winning director confirmed the development in a tweet on Monday. The filmmaker is yet to finalise the cast for the web series.

Mehta said Dubey's story is a reflection of current times where politics, crime and lawmakers form a curious nexus.

The web series will go on floors next year.

Producer Shailesh Singh's Karma Media and Entertainment in association with Polaroid Media has bought the rights for the upcoming project.

Singh, who has backed films like Tanu Weds Manu and Aligarh, said Vikas Dubey's family wanted Dubey's story to be depicted with authenticity, and was approached by many people, but they managed to convince them. He also said Dubey's family is still coping with the recent event.

Vikas Dubey, who was shot dead in a police shootout on July 10, gained notoriety after his involvement in the killing of a former state minister of Uttar Pradesh.

After a dramatic arrest from Mahakaal temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on July 9, Dubey was handed over to the Uttar Pradesh Police's Special Task Force (STF).

He was being escorted to Kanpur by an 18-member UP Police team when the gangster snatched a gun from an STF commando and opened fire. In retaliation, police shot Dubey.

He was taken to the Hallett Hospital for treatment, but was declared dead by the doctors.
